A small informal group who enjoyed the Viennese Waltz started a series of waltz dances in Manhattan in the late 1930's or early 1940's and formalized it as the Waltz Series In 1948. Over the past 70 years, waltzers have danced at Webster Hall, now a hot downtown dance club on East Eleventh Street, and Jaeger House, at Lexington and Eighty-fifth Street. There, they climbed to the third floor gymnasium, which was transformed into a ballroom with the aid of a mirrored wall and crystal chandeliers rescued from the demolition of the Ritz-Carlton. In the 1980’s and 1990’s the waltz evenings were held at the Roosevelt Hotel in their grand ballroom. Nowadays, waltzers dance in a sophisticated Fourteenth Street ballroom with spectacular north and east views of the Manhattan skyline, and at private clubs.
